This study describes and compares the English and Romanian heraldic vocabularies, seen as both specialized lexicons and repositories of social and geographic realities. The main aim is to explain and illustrate Heraldic English and Romanian as autonomous functional linguistic varieties, justified by the extensive terminology – technical words and general words with specialized meanings. The heraldic vocabulary is studied in synchronicity, although its full understanding employs the study of the social and historical background which led to its emergence and development.
